A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota
Join us for a community book read and conversation with contributing authors of A Good Time for the Truth edited by Sun Yung Shin. In this enlightening book, 16 of Minnesota’s best writers provide a range of perspectives on what it’s like to live as a person of color or Native American in Minnesota.

The evening begins with a panel discussion featuring Sun Yung Shin, Rodrigo Sanchez-Chavarria, Kao Kalia Yang, Heid E. Erdich.
Sun Yung Shin is editor of A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota, the author of poetry/essay collections Unbearable Splendor; Rough, and Savage; and Skirt Full of Black (all from Coffee House Press), a co-editor of Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption, and author of bilingual illustrated book for children Cooper’s Lesson.
Rodrigo Sanchez-Chavarria is a writer and spoken word poet of Peruvian heritage involved with Palabristas, a Minnesota-based Latin poets collective. An MFA student at Hamline University he writes about fatherhood, the duality of two cultures in English, Spanglish, and Spanish, and more.
Kao Kalia Yang is a Hmong American writer and the author of The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir, published in 2008 by Coffee House Press, and The Song Poet, published in 2016 by Metropolitan Books. She was the featured MahtoREADi author in 2010.
Heid E. Erdrich is Ojibwe, enrolled at Turtle Mountain. She is author of four collections of poetry and co-editor of Sister Nations: Native American Writers on Community. Her books include Original Local: Indigenous Foods, Stories, and Recipes from the Upper Midwest and Curator of Ephemera at the New Museum for Archaic Media.
